Gavinthe soul of a musician, the heart of a true friend -- confidante and advisor to Alec |

![]() Theodor Rombouts 1625-30 |
Gavin grew up in the same small, poverty-striken village as Alec and the two were life-long friends. Possessed of an artist's talent and wit, Gavin took up poetry and the lute as a young boy, yet grew strong and unafraid through his rough and tumble play and sporting antics with Alec. Never one to anger easily, he none-the-less greatly admired the passion of his friend and early-on believed strongly in the causes that Alec espoused. Perhaps keener than Alec at sensing impending disaster, he proved to be a capable warrior, astute advisor and loyal friend until the last. Gavin appears first as an old wandering minstrel, narrator of the tale of glory gained and lost, then as his younger self throughout most of the play until he appears as the old minstrel again at the end.
