Joanna grows up within the castle walls, and her father, ever striving to better his family's position, meets an untimely death as the result of evil King Dereck's lust for her mother. As a consequence, Joanna grows sharp-tongued and her hatred of her step-father makes her distrustful of all those in positions of power. When Alec assumes the throne, she is sure that he is just another egotistical bully. Gradually, she allows herself to see more of his real character and she falls in love with the man. After many years, she also tires of Alec's continual comings and goings, but her pleas that he set aside his tiresome quests fall on deaf ears. Joanna appears first as a young maiden of the court, then becomes the object of Alec's affection and ultimately his caring wife. At the end of the show she is an older woman yearning for the man she loves. |
